Reading Response 2

The book “The Last Song” has a lot of unique characters and the author, Nicholas Sparks does a good job introducing them in the first few pages. He gives us a portrayal of a typical teenage daughter. She’s only concerned with her very own life, not giving any sort of effort to make sure that others know she cares about them. “Ronnie snapped her gum. Her mom hated that, which was the main reason she’d done it pretty much non-stop as they’d driven up I-95” (p 6). This seems to be a stereotype model of any teenager out there. However, there are teens who don’t act like this and having this idea that they are some kind of rebellious group of kids can really frustrate them.

Another thing thing that Nicholas Sparks brings to the table is a divorced couple, trying to live out their lives, making everything as “normal” as is can be. The mom in this book has found someone new, someone who takes care of her and her kids. The dad, however, is still struggling to get his life back together. He’s living in a building that isn’t even owned by him and he’s just trying to get through one day at a time. He still puts his ex-wife’s life before his own.  He makes sure that she is still alright and that she is getting through her own, new, adjusted life before he focuses on his own entirely. “‘I’m glad you found someone.’ Kim stared at him, clearly wondering whether to accept his words at face value or plunge into sensitive territory. ‘In January,’ she finally said. ‘And I want you to know with the kids…Brian doesn’t pretend to be someone he isn’t. You’d like him” (p 18).

The last character that is introduced in the early pages of the books is a younger teen boy named Jonah. He is a portrayal of any chipper young teen boy. He is curious about anything and everything in life, all he wants to do is have fun and its hard for him when his sister hates all things around her. He just continually does the best to make the best of the situation that he’s in at the current moment in time.
