Reading Reaction: Inciting Incident in Zoo

So far in my book, there has just been a set up of characters and the back story line. Nothing too major had happened, until now. I have just come across the main inciting incident of the book, one of the characters, Abe, has been attacked by the lions on the African plain. Jackson Oz is with him and at first he tries to protect Abe, the he realizes that he needs to protect his own life as well. This inciting inciting has given a huge segue into what might happen with the rest of the animals.

This book also does a great job with descriptions and bringing out the characters thoughts and emotions. It makes it easy to picture the images in my mind and it adds more affect to the meaning of the book. The character Jackson Oz is the narrator and often author, Patterson will go inside of his thoughts to further a situation. For example, here is a quote from Oz when facing the challenge of the lions “I was visited with the same sudden, gut-squeezing spike of fear that I’d experienced when I first jumped out of a Black Hawk as an Army Ranger medic in the Battle of Fallujah” (Patterson 84). The thoughts that are running throught Jackson’s mind help him and us have a comparison to the situation he’s going through.
