The Origins of Modern Divorce

The Origins of Modern Divorce

This article was very fascinating because it had quite a bit of history to it, it shared traditions and beliefs from differnt cultures around the world and at different times and compares them to America. The thesis of this article states that we don’t truly know how much divorce is going on in America, that is the purpose of this article. To find out how much divorce is happening, you first have to know what it is and a little bit of culture behind it. “People married to acquire influential in-laws, effect business mergers, raise capital, improve their social status, seal military alliances, or expand their family labor force. Romantic love was not unknown in the past, but it was not closely linked to marriage.” To summarize, a big portion of the article talked about reasons for divorce, and the most general reason was for difference opinions. In history (and occasionally still today) people took part in arranged marriages and had to tough it out, they weren’t allowed to divorce, people today are thinking that if something doesn’t work out then they don’t have to do it anymore, they aren’t giving 100% effort towards their relationships and that is hurting our culture. This will be a great article to use in my paper because it gives historical examples that will help readers to understand divorce a little better.
